The Family CFO: The Couple's Business Plan for Love and Money
With The Family CFO, Mary Allvine and Christine Larson have put forth anexcellent book on finance for couples. Sociologists tell us that most marriagesend because of disagreements over money; this seems the more needlesssince money is never an insurmountable problem, just one that needs carefulplanning. what a service this volume could perform by helping more peoplereach their 25th, 40th and 50th anniversaries.

Indeed, couples may reach fairly advanced milestones and not be out of the woods when it comes to financial planning. A great tool for couples of any age, this book will be particularly welcome at that point when retirement planning becomes a recurring topic of discussion. With a sensible but sympathetic tone, it gives detailed advice on how to make decisions effectively without major arguments. Allvine and Larson present a unique method for doing this: separate the financial side of a marriage so that it functions as a business, and does not seep into other aspects of the relationship. To make it the more handy, an excellent glossary of financial terms is included. This is really clever: the better couples understand their finances and how exactly their money operates, the less prevalent will be misunderstandings, and therefore disputes.

A highly entertaining read, as it tells the stories of real couples and addresses everyday problems that will be familiar to anyone who's handled money. The opening chapters outline the Family CFO system and how to implement it. Later chapters tell you how to decisively end arguments by following the Family CFO system, how to handle debt, and how to go about making major decisions such as home buying, changing jobs, financing a family and planning retirement. The final chapter provides advice on getting through financial emergencies intact.

Many people fall in love while young and carefree, with few responsibilities and even fewer assets. The inescapable reality of marriage is that it's a financial partnership as well as a romantic adventure. The financial burdens that accumulate can easily overwhelm every part of a relationship, causing stress and bad feelings to build.

The authors of The Family CFO have devised a rather ingenious method of defusing such potentially disastrous situations. The plan they offer is concise and practicable, and an interesting challenge too. If money has ever caused turbulence in your marriage, don't consider planning a new life stage – including retirement – without it.
