The Future Me: Authoring the Second Half of Your Life
Time flies, the moreso as we get older – that's something most of us are resigned to. But how many people really prepare ahead in light of this? How many of those who are looking towards retirement in the next decade or two can say they know where they are going, or how they will spend their latter years?

The Future Me: Authoring the Second Half of Your Life should be both a wake-up call and a positive inspiration to those of a certain age who peruse its pages. As the title suggests, it advocates a pro-active attitude that, if adopted, will have readers taking control of their destiny in the second half of life – and, quite possibly, judging those years to be their best.

As the average lifespan continues to lengthen, so does its "second half." The chance that a person will spend nearly as many years retired as they did working is becoming quite substantial. Many people put a lot of thought and care into their early life decisions, such as the direction of their education or choice of spouse, then act as though later life decisions are barely worth considering.

Given the fact of longer lives – not to mention a growing number of opportunities that are opening up to mature adults – this carelessness is foolish. Why not use the spare time retirement affords to chase some long-held dreams? You might earn a degree, tour the world or found an organization. The Future Me helps you plan for the future by pointing out the need to do so, but it does more: by getting you revved up for the adventure later life might be, it makes planning fun.

John Beilenson, a consultant on the implications of an aging population, writes to empower. His writing has the potential to improve readers' attitudes about aging, to encourage them to connect with friends and mend damaged relationships, and to pursue their aspirations. He offers tips on staying vital, urging readers to stay sharp with memory-boosting activities, to exercise creativity, and to attend to their experiences to enhance a sense of meaningfulness in activities. The book, in other words, is quite holistic in its approach.

This could hardly be more appropriate to the baby boomer generation soon to swell the ranks of retirees and mature adult. Numerous studies have evidenced that boomers, as a group, are peculiarly interested in finding meaning in their lives, and expanding their minds and horizons as they grow older and have more time for themselves. This bracing tour of the possible is sure to ignite their imaginations and propel a rebirth of activity and learning among the mature adult population.
