Advances in Senior Assisted Living
Baby boomers have not been content, at any point in their lives, to accept and fulfil expectations without question. Now advancing on retirement age – the leading-edge boomers begin turning sixty in less than a year – they have set about redefining retirement and senior living, life stages they have come to associate with inexorable decline. In response, builders, developers and designers are consumed with the task of developing living spaces that will appeal to the tastes and later-life aspirations of the large, and largely wealthy, baby boomer market. Companies are commonly employing new terms like "active adult" and "active living community" to reflect new, dynamic concepts of what senior living is. While the "new" seniors are open to the idea of senior living communities and, at a later stage, assisted living, they will place more emphasis than did previous generations on maintaining a level of activity and independence as long as they possibly can.
The numerous contributors to Aging, Autonomy, Architecture: Advances in Assisted Living– many of them top researchers and professionals in the field – are concerned here with the way design and function can be directed to the aim of helping seniors achieve the aim of continued self-reliance. As the population ages and greater numbers of adults require some level of assistance, it will be increasingly in the best interests of society as a whole to provide services to meet particular needs. Assisted living is one of the fastest-growing subsectors of the senior living industry, largely because it meets seniors halfway. Assisted living communities usually provide singles or couples with private units containing cooking facilities, but also offer access to a full-service dining room to be availed of according to need and inclination. Residents are also provided with on-site health care, leisure and social activities.
Included in this volume are cases studies of theory put in practice, and commentary on related issues such as special needs for persons with dementia, the value of good marketing and management, and adaptations that can make communities more culturally sensitive. A specific, research-based resource, it will be welcomed by designers and planners as well as administrators, managers and marketers. The number of senior housing facilities nationwide having more than once doubled in recent years, the industry has experienced its share of growing pains and more such books, authored by authorities in the field, could ensure smoother expansion of the assisted living trend.
